Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about freesalaries's data, privacy, and mission.
Is my salary data really anonymous?
Totally. We don't even have a user registration or login system. The moment you hit submit, your data goes straight into a massive pool of other anonymous salaries without any identifying markers attached to it.
How do you stop people from lying about their pay?
We use statistical outlier detection. If someone claims to make $5 million a year as a junior barista, our system immediately flags it and hides it from the aggregate median formulas. We also allow the community to report suspicious entries for manual review.
Can I edit or delete my salary after I submit it?
Because everything is strictly anonymous, there is absolutely no way for us to uniquely identify that a specific salary submission belongs to you. Because of this security design, submissions cannot be edited or deleted once they are sent.
Is this service really free?
100% free. We might run some unobtrusive, privacy-style ads in the future just to keep the servers running, but accessing the core salary data will always be free.
Where does the 'Market Median' come from?
It's calculated dynamically based on all the verified submissions in our database for that specific job title and country. We trim the extreme outliers on both the top and bottom ends to give you a highly realistic middle ground.
Why did you build freesalaries?
Because getting actual, unfiltered compensation data is too hard. Job applications hide it, recruiters dance around it, and traditional job boards force you to create accounts just to see it. We wanted a tool that is fast, global, and brutally transparent.
My country or job isn't listed. Why?
We currently support over 80 countries and 200 of the most common job titles. If yours isn't listed yet, it's either coming soon or we haven't seen enough demand for it yet. But you can always submit one as 'Other' and we will categorize it later!
